Independent vulnerability assessment research
Network Vulnerability Assessment Guide
Plan scope, authorization, scan execution, validation and remediation follow-up.
Practical workflow
- Define the purpose and authorized scope of the assessment.
- Identify assets, dependencies and potential operational impact.
- Select suitable scanning methods and confirm tool limitations.
- Validate significant findings before escalating.
- Assign remediation owners and record follow-up checks.
Where Nessus fits
Nessus can support vulnerability assessment, but scanner output is evidence to investigate rather than a guarantee of exploitability or safety. Review Nessus capabilities and compare editions when selecting tools.
Before running a network assessment
Document the permitted IP ranges and maintenance window, decide whether authenticated checks are appropriate, and identify the person responsible for reviewing results. Reassess after remediation rather than treating a single scan as permanent assurance.
